Where does one begin? I suppose this moment is as good as any . . . Hi! I'm Beau. Perhaps it's my unique luscious coat or my athletic physique; but they also call me beautiful. I'm young, eager to explore, to take on life with wings beneath my feet. Take a walk with me and you'll know what I mean. My feet barely touch the ground as I stride in open spaces. I'd make a perfect companion for someone who shares my passion for life . . . like a running buddy!!! I admit, I do get excited at times in my pen , but that's just a facade, so that someone pays attention to me and takes me out. Some might even find me a tad overzealous, in the initial moments of my freedom. Wouldn't you do the same, if you were locked in and the world passed by in front of your eyes? Give me time, I can be a perfect gentleman too. I'd quietly sit right next to you, give you warmth in silence, or extend my paw to you like an old friend. Perhaps, you could then hug me or give me a treat (or two?) . . . I know I have lots to learn, and I really want to. I'm not sure I understand how I got here or why am I here; But it gets lonely. I see families glance over me and I look at them expectantly as they pass by. I'm looking for my companion to start my life with. Everyone deserves a fair shot at life. Buster is all boy, and is looking for someone to be his best pal. For those who are old enough to remember, he looks a lot like Petey, the dog on the old TV show, "The Little Rascals!" Just like Petey, Buster is waiting to get into all sorts of adventures with you. Buster is a well-built American Bull Dog or Pit Bull mix. He's always ready to go do something and will need a confident, experienced owner who is familiar with active, strong, smart dogs. He would probably be too energetic for small children. He has a great sense of fun and really loves stuffed toys that he can shake vigorously and toss about. Watch him pounce and play and you'll laugh right out loud at his antics! He's also very aware of his "house" manners and hates to go in his kennel, so if he's bouncing around in there, it's because he's holding it and waiting for you to take him out. A young boy with a neat streak - now that's really something! Buster has been transferred to a foster group and has been living with a trainer who is helping him refine his manners and skills. Buster already knows sit, down, stay, come, heel, and is working on more. He should go to a home that will continue with his training. Included in his adoption are a complimentary go-home lesson and a follow-up private home lesson. Buster would do best in an adult home with no cats and experienced owners. Tate A504797 - Adopted 5/16/2008 : Tate A504797 • 3-yr-old • Male • Labrador Retriever • Arrived 28-Mar-2008 5/16/2008 Update: Tate was adopted by a wonderful woman with a lot of dog experience yesterday. He did great his first day in his new home. He went on a long walk, played with the neighbor's labs, and had fun swimming in the pool. Tate may finally get the life he missed out on for so long. Good luck Tate! Tate came to the shelter hungry and in need of medical care, but his hard luck in life hadn’t spoiled his good nature. His initial evaluation said he was calm and gentle. We hoped his luck would turn around when he was fed and cared for, but after being confined for 6 weeks – and 3 with no walks while his health needs were treated – his behavior has deteriorated. Now that he feels better, it is especially hard for this still-young boy to deal with life in the shelter and he is expressing his frustration by jumping and mouthing hard enough to break skin. The staff does not think it is fair to keep him at the shelter much longer, so Tate needs to find a home, by Sunday May 18th at 5 pm. Tate can go only go to a foster home through a TLAC-approved rescue group. We have the rescue group, we need the foster home. Because he is still learning how to behave, he must go to a home without young children, and with someone who will be kind but firm in teaching him how to act. Tate loves treats so much – no doubt because he knows what it is to be hungry – that he should catch on quickly to treat-based training. He is smart and eager to please the volunteers who have earned his respect. Tate seems to be housebroken and he knows how to fetch. He did well in his walks on the trail and in his professional evaluation. He also loves playing in the water. Low-cost training options are available for Tate. You can help write a happy ending to the hard-luck story of Tate’s life. He will pay you back with all the love in his big heart. Tate did great at the evaluation and on the ride over. If anyone wants more details, here is the evaluator's report. Evaluation Report on "TATE" TLAC Young (18-24mo) recently neutered black male mixed breed. Tate was calm and relaxed on approach of both male and female adults (no children present for evaluation). Tate easily engaged in a game with a toy and remained appropriate even at high levels of stimulation/frustration. He is quick to recover from that intensity and settles quickly. He is confident but has no knowledge of what is expected of him. He has no aggression tendencies. I feel based on third hand reports of the bite incidents that is was situational prolonged frustration. He has no intent for aggression. He is willing to share both food and toys and shows no tendency toward possessive behavior even when challenged. He handled grooming and examination with minimum hesitancy and offered no resistance. He has great potential for an active pet home or working position. Training is highly encouraged to elicit proper behavior in play. This older girl is a wonderful patient playmate and is helping several of our young dogs learn good play manners. Marshmallow is a mellow dog, but she loves to fetch and swim. Sure she’s lost her girlish figure, but Marshmallow has a lot of life left to live and a lot of love to give. 2/14/2008 update. Marshmallow's heartworms are being treated at no cost by TLAC. They were drawn to him by his cage spinning, so I guess it's a good thing we never broke him of that habit after all. If there were a football team for dogs, Barney would be the star quarterback. It's no secret that this enthusiastic dog will do anything for a treat. Note: Barney likes having the respect due the captain of the team and has been known to get into shouting matches when other dogs start talking trash to him on the field.
